How to Prepare for a Courthouse Wedding in Raleigh, NC

Courthouse weddings have become increasingly popular for couples who want an intimate, simple way to get married.

Getting Your Marriage License in Wake County

Before you can get married at the courthouse, you’ll need to obtain a North Carolina marriage license.

In Raleigh, you can do this at the Wake County Register of Deeds office located in downtown Raleigh.

Both partners must be present and bring:

• A valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID)
• Social Security number (if you have one)

The cost of a marriage license in Wake County is $60. No appointment is needed, and hours are typically 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday–Friday.

Once issued, the license is valid for 60 days, meaning you must get married within that timeframe.

Courthouse Wedding Hours in Raleigh

Marriage ceremonies at the Wake County Justice Center are performed by a magistrate.

Ceremonies are typically available:

Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 11:30am and 1:30pm - 3:30pm.

One important thing to know is that ceremonies are walk-in only. The courthouse does not take appointments, so couples are helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because of this, we always recommend arriving earlier in the day if possible.

You will also need to bring:

• your marriage license
• a valid photo ID

two witnesses, 18 years of age or older

The magistrate ceremony fee is $50, which is usually paid in cash.
